In fact, it seems to me to be a rude thing to do, but at least the Novell edition does a decent job of opening them. The docx files written by the Novell app open correctly in MS Word but lose most or all of their formatting when opened in OOo3.0.1, so I think I will be rolling back to the 2.3 edition, even though I can't think of a good reason for sending a docx file to anyone. I installed 3.0.1 believing that it had the same capability, but apparently, it is, like you say, only able to read these files and still cannot write them. I still have another machine with the Novell 2.3 version and the odf-converter plugin, which is still able to write docx files that MS Office will open.
